NALACS, the Netherlands Association for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, is an association for everyone in the Netherlands who is engaged with Latin America and/or the Caribbean. Its members include researchers, PhD candidates and students, as well as journalists, NGO staff, and government and business representatives. Founded in 1996, NALACS mission is to promote knowledge and debate on issues related to Latin America and the Caribbean. It aims at being the leading network related to Latin America and the Caribbean in the Netherlands and to provide a platform for its member to connect both online and offline. NALACS creates opportunities for its members to share knowledge and increases visibility within the community of Latin American and Caribbean specialists and beyond.
The NALACS board has seven members, each elected for three years. General meetings open to all members are held once a year, generally linked to a lecture or a seminar. The current board consists of the following members:

NALACS organizes lectures, seminars and conferences on social, political and cultural developments in Latin America and the Caribbean, often in cooperation with other institutions and organizations. NALACS focuses on urgent or otherwise topical issues, invites prominent (international) speakers and offers a forum to experts based in the Netherlands. In addition, NALACS regularly contributes to (premiere) screenings of Latin American documentaries and movies in the Netherlands.For NALACS members there is a reduced fee for activities and some of them are even free of charge for our members.
Some activities we organized in the last few years are the 2016 Conference ‘Cities and Citizenship in Contemporary Latin America and the Caribbean’ in Delft, with keynotes by Prof. Dr. Rivke Jaffe and Prof. Dr. Clara Irazábal, and more than fifty paper presentations, and the 2014 Seminar ‘Leaving Latin America’ in Amsterdam, about the termination of the development cooperation program between the Netherlands and Bolivia and speakers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and academia.
In cooperation with the Latin Americanist PhD student network OLA, NALACS regularly organizes workshops intended specifically for this PhD candidates. This may be a master class or a study day for and by PhD students, focusing on their research experiences. Recent examples include 'Conference skills' (2016, conducted by Roberto Rocco) and 'Online reputation and social media for academics' (2016, conducted by Emiel Martens).
Last but not least, in order to stimulate and recognize talent at the MA level, NALACS organizes an annual Thesis Award. An independent jury awards the prize, worth €250, to the MA thesis that succeeds best in combining scientific excellence with creativity and writing skills. The award ceremony takes place during the first months of the year.

Our advisory committee
In 2008, the NALACS board invited anumber of individuals who are well-positioned within the Latin Americanist and Caribbeanist community in the Netherlands to serve as a sounding board in terms of the overall vision and strategy and to facilitate contacts with different sectors of the membership. This advisory committee (‘Comité van aanbeveling’) consists of the following members:

NALACS closely collaborates with Cedla and with OLA, the Latin Americanist PhD student network in the Netherlands. We also cooperate with sister organizations in other European countries, notably ADLAF (Germany) and SLAS (United Kingdom).
