Dialogues with Civil Society in Times of COVID-19: Eliana Chávez and Oscar Apaza

 

On Thursday, July 16th, 2020, Nalacs and CEDLA: Centre for Latin American Research and Documentation invite you to the first online edition of the ‘Dialogues with Civil Society’ series. In face of the COVID-19 situation, our upcoming debates will be held online and will focus on the effects of the pandemic in Latin America and the Caribbean.

 

We will start off the webinar series discussing the challenges posed by the current health crisis on urban spaces in Peru. The sociologist and consultant from the International Labour Organization Eliana Chávez O’Brien (Pontifical Catholic University of Peru – PUCP) and the architect and researcher Oscar Apaza Frisancho (Interdisciplinary Research Group on Urban Territories and Cities – PUCP) will address the vulnerability of informal workers during the pandemic, new challenges and opportunities for the employment sector in Peru, and the effects of the pandemic in the access to public spaces and housing in the country, among other topics. Both speakers will give a 15-minute presentation, after which the floor will be open for questions from the audience.

 

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Eliana Chávez O’Brien is a sociologist from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP), Master in Governance and Public Policy, director of the Consortium of NGOs that support Small and Micro Enterprises in Peru, and researcher in the areas of Employment, Informal Sector, and Poverty. She has experience working in the public sector in the area of public policy and in the private sector leading programs and projects, coordinating networks, and various work teams. She has twenty years of experience working at the ILO, coordinating research and policy in Latin America and the Caribbean. She also works as a consultant for several international organizations and is the author of books and journal articles.

Oscar Hugo Apaza Frisancho is an arquitect with specialization in urban planning from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP), and research fellow of the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Urban Territories and Cities – PUCP. He is also member of UDEAL, an organization that groups students and professionals from different urban careers in the pursuit of fairer cities.
